Air Box Removal

Hey Guys.

Been a while but I still have my KZ750. The carbs are headed to Wired George for a rebuild and I got to thinking about taking the airbox out. Thinking of replacing it with Pod filters. Do y'all recommend them or staying with the OEM airbox?

Whats the trick in removing it if I go that route?

My 750 came with K&N pods and contrary to what some say it was not to difficult to jet. I found an airbox and put it on because I wanted a more stock look . Honestly not a lot of difference in performance between pods and box. Got caught in a rainstorm once when I had pods and the bike coughed and spluttered (wet pods) for 50km and I was lucky to make it home.

Unless you are dead set on the look of pods keep the airbox . New soft supple airbox hoses are a good investment.

milwaukee sazwall, ryobi 4" grinder using the 6" disc, and the sledgeomatic 5lb poi pounder shortshaft handle with a modified long reach cheater. When you end up with more parts taken off then what you started with, it's done.

If you have the stock exhaust I would keep the airbox, but with new carb and airbox boots.
With a 4/1 I would go with a good set of filters like K&N or Uni.

Not set one way or the other but hated how dificult it was to remove the carbs with it 'in the way'. maybe hoses like you mention is a good idea. I'm not worried about the jetting since wired george will be taking care of it.

Remove the air box. Then, sell your golf clubs, bowling ball, and TV.

You won't have any time for those things, you'll be too busy tuning your bike.

You use a saw zall! Cut it down the middle! on KZ900 - KZ1000's (OUCH)! :ohmy: That's what I did 5 or 6 times in the 70's and 80's till I learned.
That is why they are so hard to come by and so Expensive! OEM's.
This trick goes with all the 4 - 4 pipes stock & ugly I cut in half to make loud! :ohmy:

If I ever decided to remove my airbox I would do it the way the guy in the video below does his.

I would change pods for OEM box.
Pods don't filter air good enough. K&N filters are supposed to be oiled and nobody does that. So dust goes thru, killing compression.
There is an article about K&N filters. Do they increase power? yes they do, because air goes thru w/o any cleaning!
So, whoever wants to come and switch my pods to air box, I'll do the work!

i've been in touch with them about making one for my KZ550.

There are a few DOHC CB750 guys that claim they work as good or better as a stock airbox, and definitely better than pods. Something about having one pod-type airbox per two carbs, the alternating draw from the carbs creates something similar to the vacuum created by an OEM box.
