I always burn my old rear tires to the ground before I replace them......but I don't go down the street with them.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em :woohoo:

I live near Portland, Oregon and my rider is a '76 KZ900 I bought new. I'm also in the process of restoring another one and a '73 Z1.

I'm a big fan of Shinko tires, one because they are good tires, but also because the prices make what this thread is about much more affordable. Much easier to have new matching rubber every so many years, when you have several bikes or are on a tight budget using Shinko rubber. My only worry is they are becoming so popular as more people discover them that the prices will start to go up.

I've been bad about this going with a nice looking design Yokohama or Conti rear tire then cheaping out on the front (non matching) and leaving them on for ever........ the cheap Bridge stone on it now is older than I care to admit and will be replacing it very soon with a 712 Shinko to match the rear...... Did have a good Yok on the front with 2 Conti rears I ran but I really pushed it too. (Only 2 fronts and 5 rears since 85) damn....

I'm more of a straight line guy and don't do much in the curves but still I admit I've been lucky and not too smart.

I'm glad you got new tires - I've seen them come apart, and I hate seeing anybody looking like they could compete in the Strawberry/Roadrash/Scar pageant !

My wife asked me if I still loved her - I said "Honey, I love you more than new carburetor boots ! "

I've had couple of flats over the years and certainly a rapid deflation of any sort, even at relatively low speed, will leave you with little desire to repeat the experience and usually feeling lucky that you weren't going faster, it didn't happen earlier in different road conditions etc. The thought of a tire coming apart, as I commented earlier is just to horrible to even contemplate. On all the vehicle I've owned, over the 40 years I've been driving, tire problems have almost always occurred when the tires were worn and /or old, so it makes sense tome to keep your tires fresh on a motorcycle. Yes it can seem like unnecessary expenditure at times, but $120 for a pair of Shinko 230 Tourmasters, or less for some 712's is really a cheap insurance, if it prevents the more costly alternative.

Had a blow out on the 10 late at night on my 350 Honda with my girl on the back and all our stuff. A spoke broke and went through the tube. Lucky it was late. We covered the four lanes. side to side before we stopped. I could swear we went down twice. Talk about VIOLENT. No control. I had one on Dillon on the Z1 but it was slower. I could feel it getting squirrely then side to side. By that time I was almost stopped. Had to ride it a few blocks to the station. She would go a few feet sideways then switch and go sideways the other way. Nothing to fool with.

Yea, riding on old tires can be a big disaster. I probably have the record for the shortest round trip/wreck. Took one of my 78 KZ650s out and at the time had like 20yr old tires on it, but no miles for the most part. Rode less than 1/4 mile, took a turn, took a spill and rode the 1/4 mile back home. No fun, and expensive and potentially painful.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Like I said, not something you want to repeat. What I remember of it is that when it first happens you think "Holy Crap" then think it will be alright, but it torments you until you finally manage to stop, every time you think "I'm going to be OK", it's off again. Even though you are going slower, the tire is getting flatter and more out of shape, so it just keeps getting worse and even when you are down to walking pace you are still struggling to stay on and keep it under control - the ultimate white knuckle ride, definitely something to avoid at all costs. To this day it's still the thing that stops me going really fast for long, when I get up to high speeds I always back off pretty quickly when I imagine a tire going out at 3 figure speeds.
