Which way to press stem out? was created by spdygon
Which way to press a zrx stem out? And is it just a matter of pressing out or is there other thing I need to do?
Press from bottom out or top(long end) down?

Grind ring of weld off the bottom, when pressing new yoke in this needs to very precise.

I did this on my zx750 front end- grafted onto an 81 gpz550. Works just great..20 years later.

I already have the Kz stem out.
I need to press the zrx stem out. The triple tree is aluminum it not welded.

Naked Fun has done this. The stem pushes out the log way as in your second pic. Be VERY careful. It is had to remove and easy to bend. Here is an excerpt from a ZRXOA thread---

The stock ZRX stem is very easy to bend when removing it from the stock lower. I would try to buy the lower and stem still intact so you can relieve the pressure on the stem by cutting the lower, making the stem easier to press out.

I ruined mine, and then bought one for $100 on eBay and sent it to Stites to remove for me using his end mill to relieve the lower clamp.

Still no guarantees as you have to release him from liability if it bends when he takes it out.

I have a bent stem sitting in my shop as a reminder of how hard it was to get out. I wish I knew all this before I did my conversion.

Can you heat it up and press it out from the bottom? It might have a slight taper.

You might pm Na kedfun, or search for his build thread.

If you have any questions, let me know. Also I found out after going through the hassle of swapping the stem that you CAN use the stock ZRX stem by using the conversion bearings from all balls. The ZRX stem is around 25mm OD for the bearings and the KZ is like 28mm OD. So use their site and pic up the conversion bearings. Much simpler.

Here is the build thread I remembered,. What Cory just posted is the advantage of experience. Just swapping the bearings will save you a bunch of time and possibly expense that you can now apply to some other part of the project.
