Changing the fork ears (Headlight bracket) KZ900?

I ordered a new set of headlight brackets for my 76 KZ900. It looks like I have to remove the front wheel and drop the forks out of the triple tree. But I thought I read an easier way to do it somewhere. (didn’t pay attention at the time) Can’t find it now. Any ideas?

Or just remove the bars and the upper triple and slide the brackets on.
