'82 GPZ1100 front disc brakes was created by yorkieUK
Hi guys.
I bought an '82 GPZ1100 plunger chop a few months ago to accompany my KZ1000P-9.
I use the KZP for touring & the GPZ for short rides.
The front discs are due for changing on the GPZ and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good upgrade to the standard discs that are on it?
The current 260mm discs seem to be tiny for the output of the bike.

The 260mm discs were used on a lot of Kawasaki bikes at that time, I don't recall the brakes being poor back when those bikes were new but things have moved on a lot since the early 80's. They were certainly more effective than the larger rotor set up (295mm) that was on the earlier bikes, they have more pad area and run better pads. They do look small compared to modern bikes that have really gone towards huge diameters on their brakes rotors. I actually have the same disc on the rear of my 78 KZ1000A with a Police wheel, it came from a GPz750 parts bike I had. There are plenty of those rotors for sale and I think EBC does a replacement rotor if you want new ones, but they are expensive, If you are thinking of going to a larger rotor then you encounter problems of how to mount your calipers on the fork legs. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve, but unless you are planning on some very tough braking requirements I would have thought replacing those discs with a serviceable set, with quality pads and braided hoses would give you plenty of stopping power given the type of bike you have. Given some of the mods you see on the forum the sky is the limit in terms of what can be done, it's just a case of whether it's worth it.

Some of the Vulcan cruiser bikes use the same 7 bolt mount for the rotor to the wheel, They are about 300mm on some of the models, so there are possible swaps to a bigger rotor etc. from Kawasaki parts, but I don't know what fork diameters they use or what else could be swapped over to use the Vulcan calipers or you existing ones.

The ebay item id given is invalid, no result has been sentThanks redhawk4.
She does brake okay, I was just putting the feelers out to see if there had been an successful upgrades done by anyone on the forum. I'd like to put a set of wavy discs on but I can only find cheap Chinese ones on eBay and don't trust their quality at all.

Thats my point if you have enough brakes already to lock the wheel up Id look into better rubber that can hold the road better. ;)

You seem to be of the assumption that my brakes aren't working? They are.
I'm just asking if anyone has found an upgrade to the originals before I replace my worn discs!

The only things that I see as GPz are the front wheel, fender
and maybe the engine. When new The GPz's had more than enough brake.
Run her up to 90kph and squeeze that lever and check it out for your self.

No need to replace the rotors (disks) unless they have severe damage. You can have them properly resurfaced for less than the cost of replacements. Ed
