Z1R rear shock disassembly question

I received a set of photos from another forum that showed the whole process. What confused me was the flats I saw on what I thought was the bottom of the upper eye casting ....the flats are on a separate plate that centers the spring and actually is a jam nut threaded to the shock rod so to speak.
