gas tank divot broke off

The divot on the underside of the tank that fits into the rubber hole & secures and centers the gas tank broke off. :pinch: It was bent when i got the bike but I couldn't see under the tank to realize that all it needed was to be bent back straight. Oh well. I saved the rubber piece and gorilla taped it to the frame where the divot was supposed to rest. Tank wants to slowly slide down the frame as I ride. Not a huge issue as my legs are wrapped around it keeping it from going too far but a nuisance nonetheless

Only alternative I see is removing tank and re-welding piece (time consuming job for an apartment dweller on a fixed, low income) or find a used tank but the odds of having the same paint job are slim. Might go that route anyway.

Right now the seat closes down over the bottom of the tank, as designed, and that helps but potholes and other road bumps make it work its way down.

Heres the broken divot piece:

JB Weld, or some other type of gas-proof two-part epoxy should give you a temporary/semi-permanent fix to keep that in place.

Clean both mating surfaces up real well before attempting to re-attach.

Drain gas, purge tank, wash with rubbing alcohol may be enough, take it to a welder (that obviously knows it is a gas tank) and get it welded ($20 or so) that's not too far from getting JB weld at $5 and wasting the money on that thought.

Could fill it with water if it doesn't leak, then weld it.

Reading the original post, it seems to me he was asking if there were any alternatives to welding.

People who dismess JB Weld have usually either never used it before or didn't prep their surfaces properly. That stuff works, and it's the cheapest fix that I can see.

Cheapest as in $5 for the tube, $5 in sandpaper $10 or so total, versus draining gas into a gas can (or car) loading up and taking it to a welder and getting it buzzed together for $10-$20 and being done with it. Instead of paying $10 now and $10-$20 later.

You assume that the OP doesn't already have a piece of sandpaper (who doesn't?) and you conveniently cut your welding estimate in half. I wouldn't prep and weld on a gas tank for $20.00.

Just my $0.02
