Is the best way to lower the bike just to get some smaller shocks and shorter forks? the bike is just a little too tall for me at the minute and i need to drop it about two inches.

I use shorter shocks. Measure what you have so you know where to start. Other bike model shocks bolt on but I personally dont know which ones they are. Some have used Harley shocks and I thennk shocks off of a Kawasaki Vulcan are supposed to work but take into consideration weight of bike. A harley shock may fit but it may be a little stiff from wieght difference of bikes. There are shock lowering brackets out there that some use but there are various opeinions on them. You can raise forks up through trees for sure. I have H2 forks on mine. They are about 2" shorter. Or you can dissasemble your forks and put a spacer inside(make or buy them in various lengths-usually 1"-2"-3") to shorten forks.
