KZ1000 Model Differences
23 Sep 2015 22:52
I am looking to purchase a KZ1000, I have found several KZP (police) models out there. I was wondering what the differences are between the KZP and the typical KZ models along with the LTD models. I am looking to build a Mad Max Jim Goose bike and just need to know if the frame of the models I listed above are the same and if parts are interchangable?

For reference & model identification: CycleChaos, Partzilla, & Kawasaki.com.
That won't be an easy question to answer. There is quite a bit of variation, depending upon the year & model type. Although I'm not that familiar with the Big Kaws, here's some general stuff. The KZ1000s from the 70s are different from most of the 80s models, with 1980 kinda being a transition year. There are Standard models, Ltd/CSRs, GPzs & Shaft-drive 1000s & 1100s.. The Ltd type typically have more chrome & a fat rear tire; additionally, the CSR has 48-spoked wheels w aluminum rims. The Police bikes can be lumped into two basic groups --- the C models (77-81) & the later KZ1000 P models (82-2005). The P models are pretty much unchanged through the model run & all of them have the so-called J-model engine found on the big Kawasakis from 1981-on. Ape Racing has an info page about the 1000 engines. I guess the simple answer is to first focus on whether to get either the 70s type 1000 or 80s type, then narrow it down from there. ???

Martin has it pretty much covered...the major differences are between the pre-1980 and post-1980 models. Within these pre- and post- categories much (but not all) is interchangeable...certainly more than between the pre- and post-1980 categories. Be aware that the Goose bike was based on a 1977/1978 KZ1000A (= standard) model.

Also, the P bikes have a solo seat and footboards rather than foot pegs. Changing either one is not an easy job. The P bikes also have extra bracing in the frame, and if it is complete, will have a large fairing and saddle bags.

Until 1981, the police models were designated by a "C". The TV show chips used a combination on 900's and Kz1000C's during their run.
Frame-wise, only about the headstock and main engine cradle are the same between the Kz1000P and other models. As TexasKz pointed out, the P has a solo seat, floorboards, the rear frame is different for the saddlebag mounts and radio box.
