74 z1 fork stiction
03 Sep 2015 17:14
I recently got my 74 Z1 going. New fork seaks 10 w fork oil progressive springs. The front forks seem to stick a lot the bike doesn't ride well. Any ideas?

Did you check if the tubes are bent? They can look straight but be slightly bent. Jack up the front end, loosen the clamp bolts and twist the tubes and watch for binding or loose spots. When you had them off, you should have rolled them on a flat surface. The glass of a sliding door or mirror would work. Mine were slightly bent for years. I just twisted them so they wouldn't stick. I bought new ones just two years ago from Z1E.

When I was 17 I had a 73 Z1 now I fixed up a 74 Z1. I don't remember the ride being this bad. Are these early bikes known for stiff front forks?

Did you apply a bit of fork oil to the seals during assembly? The lip of the seal could be catching on the tube. My new tubes were hard on the dust boots for a season and needed silicone spray occasionally to stop the noise. All good now though.

You may have over filled them.

Try removing the stiction by loosening everything and retighten in order, starting from the wheel spindle to the top triple tree clamp whilst bouncing up and down on the forks. The idea is to clamp everything together in a relaxed position and remove and uneven clamping stresses.

I redid my seals not long ago (one kept leaking tho I have new fork tubes). I used oil as I put it back together. Once on the bike, I added oil to the level stated. HARD as a rock. I drained some and my travel came back. Could be something just as stupid.
