Need vin help!

Hi, long time lurker first time poster. I recently aquired what i was told is a 79 kz1000 from a friend it needs a lot of work to get rolling down the road so i checked the vin and don't quiet understand how to read it I am an automotive mechanic so vehicle vins are nothing new to me however motorcycle vins are... i googled the numbers i have and came up with nada so i am turning to you good folks for some help

the vin i have is KZT00A-500231 can anyone help me out here, what am i working with?

A little more info it seems it is not a 79 the sticker says 10/76 so that would make it a 77 right?

sounds like a 77' KZ1000a but made in the USA.

I hate to hijack your thread but I have it's similar question. I have a 1976 kz900 ltd. The frame VIN number is KZ 900b- 502745. The engine VIN number is Z 1 E-273446. From what I understand this year bike was pieced together out of spare parts at the factory. Do you think this engine and frame came together?

That was the 1st yr. model of the LTD, & it was NOT put together out of spare parts
The frame & Motor numbers Never Match each other, if that's what your worried about, JDrake

Double check the motor VIN as it is way out of range for the kz900/1000 motor VINs.

According to www.zedder.com , the last Z1E series motor VIN was Z1E138846...your motor VIN is suspicious as it is way out of range...rephrased, that is not the motor that came with your frame.

Z1E-273446......I can't find where this was an engine vin that was ever produced..... What does this mean?
