upgrade steering stem bearings was created by KZ802
Hi guys,
does anyone know of a step by step for replacing steering stem bearings or has anyone covered this in a build thread somewhere? I have never done it before. I bought a set of All Balls bearings. I don't have a press or specialized tools, any tips would be appreciated. By the way I have a 1978 KZ1000 LTD. It was partially disassembled when I got it and the manual isn't much help.
thanks
Chris

Knock the old bearing cups out of the frame and off the bottom yoke, Get a bike shop or engineering place to press the bottom bearing onto the yoke, it is a 'fit' . Grease and adjust, don't over tighten.

If you are really keen, ask them to check the bottom yoke for straighness, these can get slightly bent in crashes and it screws up the handling.

Getting that race off the stem can be a challenge. I ended up very carefully cutting the race with a Dremel cutoff wheel and then breaking it with a chisel. This required a LOT of patience so I didn't harm the stem or bottom of the tree. Later, I found there is a tool that can make the job easier, and you can borrow one similar to it from Autozone (see link below). I used a piece of PVC pipe that was about the same diameter as the outer race to gently tap the lower bearing into the neck, you just need to work your way around the circumference so it goes in evenly, and a touch of grease in the neck helps. Some folks freeze the bearing so is contracts a little. Ed
