How critical is the spacing?

I have a 1981 KZ1000J, and while trying to knock the bearings out of the swing-arm I seem to have mangled this center spacer (or maybe it was already like that, I never did find all the pieces)... Anyway it originally had a flat ring around each end which were destroyed. From what I can see, the only critical measurement appears to be the length of the tube, to prevent the bearings from working in towards the center. And I believe the flat rings were to keep the tube loosely centered when you slide the bolt through the swingarm?

So, is there anything critical about the size of those flat rings? I was thinking I could hit the hardware store for some washers of about the right size, and cut out the centers on the lathe so they would fit over the tube. A quick tack with the welder, and this pipe should be good as new? Or am I getting too hopeful here?

The paint is done on the swingarm and the new bearings shipped out today, so I just need to get this piece fixed up and I should be ready to put it back together again.

Well, I agree, that's a nice price for a front wheel hub. Not sure how I'm going to fit that in the swingarm though?

It's in the swing arm?

It occurred to me after I went to bed that I took pictures of the part in question and even had the actual part number, and completely forgot to include them when I made the post. *sigh* Oh well.

Yep, that's the part I'm looking for, and that's pretty much the typical price I've seen it listed for... thus the reason why I asked the original question. If the flat rings are just for centering and not critical in their exact position as I suspect, then it seems completely unjustified to me to spend nearly $40 on a replacement part when I can spend 30 cents and a few minutes with a grinder and welder to fix the existing piece. The tube itself is undamaged, it's only the rings that have come off.

you are correct in your assessment .
it is the length which is the critical dimension.
those are just centering spacers and can be dealt with in the fashion you have mentioned.
