If I am not mistaken it did have the caliper in front of the fork.

The engine number with the DE in it would indicate it began its life on a D model which are the Z1s. So depending upon the actual number you should be able to determine which year it came from on the Zedder site.

The motor is from a kz1000,not a z1 or kz900.

Those are not 76 kz900ltd forks,the ltds had the calipers mounted on the rear of the fork legs.
Look where the little bosses for the fender stays are located,on the rear.those are plain old 77 kz1000 forks that came with the chassis. :laugh:
Oh yeah,the 78 A series bikes used those same stamped footpeg brackets.
And the 76-78 motors all looked the same other than the 1000s were stamped with 1015 versus 903 on the 900s,and the 1000s used a T in the engine serial number.
79-80 motors used different head/valve cover and engine covers than the 73-78 motors. ;)
The factory carbs can all be interchanged between the 73-80 motors. ;)

If you switch the fork legs from side to side it will put the calipers behind the forks,but it will move the little fender brace bosses to the front of forks.Im trying to remember if that was the way the 76 900ltd legs were,I haven't looked at one in a while. ;)

As always Jim is right, bur I will add. With the rear peg mounts, and master mounting it's a 77-78 kz1000 NOT a Z1, that hokey ass frame number Z1F-1170, is from an early bike, WRONG and a big form of fraud, and could land you in federal prison if you choose to resell. Hope you have the title for the kz1000 VIN number. If not, discard that title (wait and see if the real owner shows up?) and get it titled according to the non bogus frame number.

Knowingly and fraudulently selling/buying a vehicle with a tampered VIN can get you in big trouble.

If you can post a picture of the other side of the motor it would be easier to tell which crank the motor has in it.Generally the bikes with dohc stamped on the dyno cover have the older style small pin crank,the motors with the finned Kawasaki dyno covers normally have the big pin crank.The 79 ltd is kind of the exception to the rule it uses a small pin crank ,but the end of crank is different for use with the newer charging system and dyno cover same as big pin cranks.
As long as a small pin crank has been welded its pretty hard to hurt one even with a big topend/turbo and a small slick,chances are pretty good youll hurt yourself before youll hurt the crank too bad. :woohoo:

The 900/1000's didn't have a fender brace. Just the four bolts under the fender.

The 900/1000's didn't have a fender brace. Just the four bolts under the fender.

Police bikes did have lower braces,the 650/750/900/1000 lower legs look pretty much the same other than different caliper mount spacing on some.
