Correct Chain size for 1982 GPZ 750
22 Jun 2015 11:11
I believe that the original stock chain for an 82 GPZ 750 is the : 630. Is that still the best replacement size for my bike? What is the discussion about a 530 chain? Should I even be looking at that or no? I plan on changing the sprockets also. My plan is to stay with the stock number of teeth unless you guys have better advice. If I quoted the wrong size stock chain, please correct me. Thanks in advance.

630 is virtually obsolete for motorcycle use these days. You can still purchase 630 chains and sprockets, but chains are stronger than they used to be and 530 is lighter and cheaper, and more than strong enough.
On my 750E2 I bought the following:
JTR488.40 rear sprocket
JTF513.16 Front sprocket
These sprockets match the stock gear ratio.
530 chain with 102 links. (actually, you only need 101 links, but I went up and will adjust on the bike as needed when the chain is joined)
You will notice that these sprockets have more teeth than the 630 sprockets that came stock. This is because the 530 sprockets are smaller for any given number of teeth, so you must move up to more teeth or the sprockets will be too small in diameter.

Would the sprockets he quoted result in the stock ratio for a GPZ 750 R model?

The gear ratio is 40/16 = 2.5
You might want to look in your service manual to get the sprocket teeth count so a comparison can be made. I believe they are similar or identical.

You can call Z1 Enterprize, & they will hook you up with the correct sprockets & chain length, to convert to a 530 to your stock gear ratio
