79 KZ750B REAR RIM OPTIONS

Hi everybody, I'm new the the forum. Just got my wife a 79 KZ750b from a friend for free. I'm in the process of getting it rideable so I can teach her how to ride. My question is what other years and bikes could i use to swap out the rear rim. Im looking to run a mag wheel with a wide rear tire. Aslo how hard is it to swap out the rear swing arm to a sportbike style one?

Forgive me for saying it - but you don't sound 100% sincere. It sounds like you simply want to tinker with a bike. :blush:

If you are preparing the bike for your wife to use to learn how to ride why modify the bike from stock and make it more difficult to handle than the stock configuration? A longer swing arm, fat tire, etc. is going to change the way the bike handles - and probably not in a good way. So if you really are planning to teach someone how to ride a motorcycle it would seem counter-productive to make the task more difficult than it otherwise would be. Learning to ride from scratch on a stock KZ750 may prove difficult enough as is because it's a fairly heavy bike with substantial power. Ed

The mods wouldn't get done until after she is ready to move on to my 83 harley sportster. As to how difficult it would be to learn on, Ive taught other people how to drive on motorcycles that were bigger and faster. I'm just trying to get a jump on the info now. She likes the cruiser style motorcycle and I like both the cruiser and sportbike styles. After looking around the net for a bit, It seems like the Kz750 can be made into a good blend of both. So she gets the Harley and I'll take the Kz. I've owned many 70's and 80's Japanese bikes over the years, but have never had the chance to modify one. Usually because it was my only mode of transportation. With that being said, do you know of any other rims or swing arms that would fit?

Sorry, I don't know. I don't recall seeing swing arm swaps done on the KZ750 twin. Maybe someone else here has made the swap or has some info. It looks like your rear rim is a 2.15 width, so maybe something from a KZ with a 16 inch rear wheel (which I believe is a little wider) might be possible. Ed

Rear wheel. From the diagrams at Partzilla I believe your 79 750B rear axle is 18mm, so you might want to get a rear wheel from a KZ1000. I don't know if a fatter tire will fit your swing arm or how easily a different wheel will swap. Aside from the tire width, you may need to shim the sprocket or disk, or you might need the axle spacers n stuff from the donor wheel. ???

The 77-90 KZ1000-B Ltd has a 16" cast alloy wheel & uses an MT90 tire (130/90-16 & 5.0" width).
