Re: Looking to extend Mileage and lower RPM 83KZ1100
05 Jun 2015 21:32On my 750, I used to get 60 mpg highway (at steady 60 mph) and when I cruised home between 70 - 75, mileage dropped to 48 mpg. That's about a 20% drop to go up 10 - 15 mph. Bikes take a huge hit in mileage above 50 because of wind drag.76KZ900 wrote: So far I'm at a half tank of 55mph riding where I would normally be on empty riding at 70mph. So it seems to have helped.

Hello, I am trying to gather info around the possibility of changing a gear ratio in my '83 Spectre 1100 SHAFT DRIVE.
I want to lower my freeway RPM for more comfy cruising.
At 75 mph it is in the high 3800-4000 range and too noisy.
I have the 130/90 tire also.
Would anyone have any ideas.
Thank you,
David H
This was posted on this forum.. I'm pretty convinced now that someone along the line has played with either trans or final drive ratio.
75 @ 4000 rpm and he's complaining lol I'd like to see how he felt after riding mine.

Ok filled bike up today.. 97 miles 2.3 gallons. 42mpg.. That's better.. Also 98% highway. Also changed oil in final drive. Marked gear tooth with anti seize and counted... 36 on ring gear so it's factory. Guess when I want to go somewhere for distance I ride 55mph if I want to get there using less fuel.. I can tell you 55mph in 65-70mph zones is a bit unnerving..Lol

Re: Looking to extend Mileage and lower RPM 83KZ1100
06 Jun 2015 14:11It sure is. back in 1982 when the speed limit was 55 (and everybody did 65 - 70) I got a ticket in a speed trap on highway 101 near Monterey starting out on a trip to LA. So after I got the ticket, I slowed down and "only" cruised at 60 mph in a 55 zone for the rest of the trip. People were flying by me like I was standing still, almost ran me off the road.76KZ900 wrote: I can tell you 55mph in 65-70mph zones is a bit unnerving..Lol

Still would love to know how the one user was getting rpm he was getting at 75... 3800 to 4000rpm.. I don't think mine would do that with 2 more gears... And that's basically same bike I have.. I still may go with the 1000 final drive if I can prove that the ratio is lower.

I read the results. I appreciate you putting that in there. I'm still 500 rpm higher at 5mph less.. I can't verify tach.. But it's high rpm at 70mph. I'm saying it's right.. Speedo is dead on with gps from 40 to 75mph. Even my feet are tingly after riding a short distance at highway speeds of 65 to 70... Let alone my hands.

Yeah I read it too. I don't know what gears in the speedo he was talking about unless he meant the odometer gearing and the larger rear tire will raise the speed in relation to the lower RPM's. Yes a larger tire will lower the RPM's at a given speed. Trouble is you have the largest tire you can get?

Will a 150/90 tire fit this bike? If so anyone smarter than me.. (Which should be most) what kind of rpm diff would it make?
