Back rest / Sissy bar compatibility was created by RFE81LTD1K
I've been looking for a short back rest/sissy bar for my 81 1000 LTD. I don't want it on the bike all the time. Just when the wife wants to go for a ride. As you know, finding something tasteful that's in good condition is no easy task. It would help if I knew what years and models will fit what? For example will a rest/bar from a 79 1000 LTD bolt up to my 81 ? What about one off of an earlier 900 or 1000? Or a police bike?

Here's a short K&G backrest. I believe it's intended to be bolted to a KG luggage rack, but you might be able to adapt it to your bike. K&G racks are universal fit.

The problem with fitting a Sissy bar or rack is the Duck Bill. I bought a used Honda universal fit rack and adapted it to fit my Z1. Unfortunately there isn't much to choose from now.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo duck bill on mine. Here's one I found on ebay. Claims it came off of a 79 1000 LTD. Kinda different and bordering gaudy but like you said there's not much to choose from. Don't know if it'll fit my 81 or not. ??? And although a rack could come in handy sometimes I'm not really looking for something that big. Like to find something small with a little more taste. Looking at it again I guess its not that bad. I've seen worst. LOL

I see it is adjustable for the rear grab bar mount. Good idea. I had to cut off the bushings and weld them to the rack for support. It was old and scratched, I bought a new one from Z1E but couldn't use it with the rack and boxes. You should be able to find something like it without the rack or buy some bushings to bolt on to a bar.

I don't like the way it looks but to keep harmony with the same woman for 36 years... I installed this thing way back then... it goes on off on off..... etc.
I also have a short version of the vertical padded part...about 10" tall.

There ya go. I like the one that says Parts Trader. It's fairly plain, small and simple. Looks removable too. Perfect. Where do I get one? Daaaa ... Parts Trader.

Been thinking about going to the drawing board. Literally. I'm gonna just find a backrest I like and then make my own mounting plates. I'll leave the original grab bar in place and either have the plates chromed or black powder coated. The plates would mostly be hidden behind the grab bar so either way I think they'd look ok.
Harley's usually have some pretty nice looking rest. That is if I can find one that doesn't say HD on it.
The width of the rest is going to be the factor that determines what make/model will work for me. Doing a rough measurement (really rough) I'll need a rest that's about 8 3/4 inches wide across the base. And about 12 inches tall top to bottom.

I actually have plenty to do before I worry too much about a sissy bar. But that won't stop me from keeping an eye open for one.

Found this one at Dennis Kirk ... www.denniskirk.com/kuryakyn/short-sissy-...94982.prd/494982.sku
The width is right now I just need to find or make some mounting plates. They have some plates but I don't know if they'd work or not. ???
