Steering stem dimensions
12 Mar 2015 02:44
Hi All!
I am new member for the site , but been looking for info and ideas for some time. Now I have a question that I can't find an answer by myself. I have zx9r front , but steering stem is 35mm. Allballs dont have conversion bearings and I just found out that there is a friend of a friend that could manufacture the stem as soon as I have the dimensions.
Ok zx9r stem hole measured, OD lower 25mm and upper 28mm at bearing, So I am missing lenght!
I do not have the original at hand. So that is why I'm asking
If Any of you have other tips for manufacturing new stem , I'm all ears
OH, the bike is 1983 KZ1000J

Why not just simply press the ZX9R
Stem out and your stock stem and have your friend make a bushing that allows the stock stem to press into then ZX9R triple? That is how most are done.... Or if you still want to make a stem, just measure your stock stem. The dimension is critical to the machinist, so do you really want to take someone else's measurement for granted? Just a thought...

That should work well if they are the same length(?)

The op says he does not have the original at hand. Is there a file in the file base with dimensions? I could swear I've seen a drawing with dimensions around here someplace.

I am a idiot as I read right over that! As far as dimensions, are concerned, I know my brother's 82 used practically the same stem as a ZRX1100, even same bearings. I have a bare ZRX stem laying in my freezer right now I could measure if they would like.

So all length measurements taken at the bottom edge of the lower bearing race of the stem. Distance from there to the lower, upper bearing race of the stem is 6.875" Here are some pics:
Now again, this for a 1999 ZRX stem, but it swapped DIRECTLY in place on my brother's 82' bike build. Your results may vary, but for length I doubt you can go too wrong from this dimension.

Yes!
This was exactly what I was missing. Now I can take yokes to this guy with measurements and pictures.
Only thing to ask, is there any material requarements?

Any good quality steel alloy should suffice such as 1018 or even a Chomemoly. Some guys even use a better aluminum alloy such a 7075 for stems. If you do a steel, have the machinist rifle drill it through the center to shed some weight.
