Re-packing a Kerker 4-1 muffler was created by LineArtist
I recently obtained an entire 79/650 for the exhaust: a black Kerker 4-1 in good condition. The current baffle has no packing.

Looking for a recommendation on packing material (not steel wool)?

The manifold and muffler are clamped together making it easy to work on. I know the end cap on the muffler is attached with a single hex nut, and the cap should come off to release the baffle.

I'm looking to get a slightly louder note from my Old Bastard and will be trying the Kerker on the off season to keep me from hibernating.

Don't worry 650ed, the air box is staying on the bike and I have another set of carbs for re-jetting. Do love my stock 79 and most likely will keep it that way.

I use the Moose brand of packing, and it works well, but it's not too cheap.

Some people use tape to hold the packing in place, but I use steel wire. The tape gets messy and sometimes doesn't want to come out clean. If you have stainless welding wire, that's probably the way to go.
