Chain Length ?
10 Oct 2014 02:42
I'm now getting around to working on the drive chain on my 77' KZ1000A. What the bike has is a 14-T front countershaft sprocket and a 33-T rear sprocket. The 630 chain has 90 Links. The wheel/tire is shoved all the forward in the swing arm and the chain has barely 1/2" free play. The center of the axle is front of the swing arm adjuster marks. When you spin the wheel, there are areas on the chain that are tighter and obviously less free play.
Surprisingly, the chain sprockets appear to be in good shape. If wanting to just replace the chain right now and return to the original 15-T front sprocket, what length 630 chain do you think I would need? The manual says 92 Links with stock 15-F and 33-R set-up, but I can't see how adding 2-links and going to a bigger front counter sprocket would move the wheel back so that you would be able to use the adjuster marks again?
I like to eventually got to 530 set-up, but just don't have the finances yet with everything else this bike is needing. Any help again is always appreciated !

Spend the money on a fresh 530 set up , those tight spots can really screw you up.
I can't prove it but I suspect that running my old chain even after soaking it in white gas for a year , helped mess up the output shaft bearings
I really like my 530 setup , it got rid of a lot of vibration and still looks great after 18,000 with very little stretching .
Just my opinion .

Using used sprockets with a new chain will cause premature chain wear. The sprockets may look ok, but they won't be a perfect fit to the chain, so the chain will wear to make up the difference. I would replace both sprockets if buying a new chain. Ed

Ed and JD, Both good "Valid" Points. Will wait a little longer and gather the finances for the 530 set-up. Just moving ahead to soon in this long term project. Thanks for the input.
