Brake Pedal Spring Install ???
20 Sep 2014 08:27
77' KZ1000A Brake Pedal Spring. Is there an way to "Help" assist installing the brake pedal spring? I have it orientated correctly around the brake pedal ( one end of the spring underneath the pedal ) and frame ( the opposite end of the spring hooked over the frame above the pedal pivot ). I just can't get the spring to hook ! Fighting the tension of the spring ! What have you guys found that helps ?

I hook both ends of the spring, then install the pedal.

Be rally careful installing it,I broke my right ear trying to keep from scratching the chrome on my turbo bikes frame, the meat tenderizer part of brake pedal did its best to imbed itself in my skull!
Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Steell, can you show me the steps how? I'm not sure how you hook both ends of the spring since one side of it sits underneath the brake pedal to put tension against it. The other end of the spring does hook to the frame. There's got to be an easier way, especially when it was assembled in the production plant?
Keep the ideas coming, I'm open to them all.

Maybe you could make a jig?
I took apart a gas blower once & had to fabricate a jig to get the big pull start spring back in place. The jig was a couple of nails & a wood board, which made the job super simple.

Is it this spring? (or please post a picture). Actually photos of where it goes on the bike would be helpful because of clearances, etc. Springs on anything are a major pain, let's figure out the easy way to get this back in there. I'll take a look on my bike, something tells me most of the KZ rear brake pedals are the same.

LineArtist, This is the spring you have pictured as well as the illustration. The left side of the pictured spring with the square hook or end, hooks on the frame. The right side of the spring ( curved end ) pictured goes underneath the brake pedal to hold it up. So if you have a "better" way to install it, I'm all ears !

Can you rotate the brake pedal 45or90or180 degrees to put tension on the spring, Set it up and then rotate the pedal arm into position and bolt it all together? I'm not sure it will clear the exhaust or anything else. If not you may need to pull the brake arm out just enough to get it to clear without stretching the spring (too much). Haven't looked at my bike today, but that's my initial suggestion.

I have the bike sitting on a stand and the exhaust is pulled off, so shouldn't have to many obstacles

Words of encouragement  But I will conquer and Thank You to the ones that provided a better insight. At least it gave me a better approach to tackle the job.
