Outer wheel bearing race stuck in hub
06 Sep 2014 17:01
So I kind of botched a front wheel bearing replacement today. Started hammering away at the rod of my bearing puller not realizing the circlip was still holding the bearing in there. The inner race broke apart and the balls came out leaving the outer race stuck between where it normally bottoms out and the gap where the circlip goes.
I had it pried up to the circlip gap but must not have done it evenly and couldn't get it any further. Hammered it back down just a bit, but now it won't budge. Seems really hard to hammer anymore without damaging the hub anymore than I already did. Going at it from the other side also seems pointless. Any suggestions? Would heating the hub with a torch significantly improve my situation?

Remove clip and bearing on other side of wheel.
Then remove the spacer and try knocking other race out.
DO NOT HEAT THE HUB OR ANY OTHER PART OF THE WHEEL WITH A TORCH>

Are you sure you don't mean:
"DO NOT HEAT THE HUB OR ANY OTHER PART OF THE WHEEL WITH A "ACETYLENE" TORCH"?
I wouldn't hesitate to heat it with a propane torch, or even a heat gun (hair drier), but in this case I'd use my TIG and run a bead across the race. Should be able to do it with an arc welder and a small rod also.

The other bearing is out, and there's really no way to knock it from the other side since the inner diameter of the race is wider than the hole. Even with a flat head angled underneath the race I still can't get enough leverage.
I'm beginning to think I damaged the area where the clip pops out of when I was whacking away at the bearing puller with the clip still in place. That would explain why I can get race up to that point, but not past it.
Thinking I'm gonna have to replace the wheel, but any other suggestions would be great!

What in the world happened to the inside circumference of the hub? It looks all chopped up where it should be smooth. Ed

Put the framing hammer away. With a small hammer or mallet and a brass rod, gentle tap out the bearing spacer. It is number 12 on the diagram I'll try to post below. Then flip the wheel over ad with the brass rod or maybe a steel one, carefully tap the race out.

Lol, yes, it is quite chopped up. The spacer, other bearing, and everything else came out super easy. I was gentle for so long, but stopped caring once realizing just how stuck in there it really is. In the end I was just trying to get it out for the sake of getting it out, yet in it remains.
Damn that circlip. Or damn myself for not checking out that diagram BEFORE starting. :pinch:
20 bucks to whoever stops by and gets the thing out of there without using a power tool...

Where are you located?
And as to doing it without power tools, that would cost you a lot more than $20 for me to do it! I'm to old, to tired, and have all the power tools needed
