1982 KZ 550 rear brake

Hello, first post here. I picked up a 1982 KZ550 LTD that had been sitting. While changing exhaust and doing some painting, I took the linkage for the rear (drum) brake apart. As rediculous as it sounds, I cannot figure out how to get the rods, spring etc back on the way it came off. I am new to working on bikes, and for the most part it's going fine. I'm sure this is an easy one for you veterans

You should really start looking for a FSM (Factory Service Manual) on eBay, for your bike. Watch that you get one that covers your specific model and year. This will show you EVERYTHING!

But till then, this should help.

You'll need to make some adjustments to the Rr brake. KZR member loudhvx has a good motorcycle stuff page w pdf manuals & info for the 550. See links in his signature of one of his replies.

Old brake shoes. If you don't know the age of the Rr brake shoes, replace them. The adhesive that binds the linings to the shoes can fail over time, so a lining can separate from a shoe, then get jammed between the shoe & drum, locking the rear wheel. It happened to me when rolling the bike off the center stand. very lucky. It would be a real drag for it to happen at speed & far from home.

New brake shoes. My preference is either OEM or Vesrah brand (made in Japan). There have been reports of other brands not fitting right on some models (EBC???).
