Please keep us posted. I have the same style of caps on my bike and it's due for fork seals and a fork oil change. The caps have never been off since the bike was new so I'm worried they are going to be stuck on there since that is about 32 years now...

It's been a couple months of soaking. So, did you ever get that fork cap off?

Might be a silly question, but. Is the bike off the ground? If not the springs are pushing up and not helping.
Probably by this time you already did it but.....

Seems to me, in order to get to the threads, you first have to get past the O ring. Those fine threads and there are a lot of them are seized. The only thing I can suggest is to tap on it where the threads are while rolling the tube on a block of wood being careful of not distorting the tube. Keep doing this and checking if it is loosening from time to time. Must have had moisture in it and electrolysis set in. The aluminum starts to decompose into a white powder thus bunching up in the threads or what's left of them. You might also try flushing out the tube from the bottom, then put in penetrating oil from there to get to the threads. It might also be possible to remove the Schrader valve and inject some in there, re install the valve and let it sit up side down to penetrate.
Good luck.
Steve
Good luck.

Yea guys... he's not been back since late Oct. Was hoping a thread bump would get him back. We'll see...
I'd be interested to hear what was discovered and if he ever got the cap off.

I'm not sure if he ever got them off. but mine were really stuck as well and I ended up pulling the forks off, clamping them into a vice, and attatching large vice grips around the nipple on top of the cap and hitting it with a large hammer. worked perfectly.
