Belt drive pulley rubbers question.. was created by TimKz44082
I pulled off the back wheel on my 81 KZ440 the other day and found that the belt pulley has about 1/4 inch movement back and forth in the rubbers. Is this normal or should the pulley be snug in the rubbers? I am thinking the play would be bad and I should pad those rubbers a bit with a slice of rubber to tighten them up. No? If I buy some used rubbers off of ebay, I expect they will be loose also.

I'm not familiar w the belt drive models. Do you mean the problem is with the rear hub shock damper?
If so, here's a topic from the archives. Of note he used a 3M auto glass urethane adhesive to do the repair.

Thanks Martin...yes that is it. The belt drive has the same thing, they just look a little different. That post you referred me to answers my question about being sloppy. So I will work on repairing that. I am wondering why repair with urethane rubber, why not just some kind of spacer made of plastic? The dampers will still work, the space just needs taken up. I will be looking for some kind of plastic trim at home depot, about 1 inch wide, 1/8 inch thick and cut it to fit each damper space. Working with urethane rubber is messy and I think unnecessary to take up 1/8 inch of space. Anyway thank for the referral...being loose is NOT ok as I suspected.

Something to keep in mind when choosing a suitable material is that the rear wheel is subjected to quite a bit of force.

Well I found a thick piece of rubber, the kind that is used as the rubber flap on a fender, cut pieces, slid them in there and lubed with a bit of dry silicone and was able to press the unit together. Real tight now. Lets see how it holds up, for the amount of riding I do, I expect it to be there working when I sell the bike in the future. Thanks for the tips!
