Normally one size bigger than stock is ok. But really you'll only be 10mm wider or just 5mm (3/16") per side. Not enough to give a "fat tire" look.

Doug I too have a stock 77' KZ1000A that you've been helping as well as others in putting it back together again. Haven't got around to selecting the tires and sizes yet, but what would you recommend? I've used both Bridgestone Battlax Bt-45's and Avon Roadriders before on other bikes and have liked the results.

Google is your friend here. This is what I found regarding your question regarding wheel/tire sizes

Slayer61, Do you know what is the stock rim width of these wire wheels on my KZ?

A 4.00 or a 120mm should be pretty close to tire that came stock on a wire wheel.
Anything wider than a 130 will have a really weird tread profile on that rim.

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Your wheel "should" have the size engraved in it somewhere. Have a look around the entire rim and it will tell you what size it is.

Something makes me think the stock front is 1.85" and the rear is 2.15".

Just checked Z1Enterprises. Those are the sizes listed for reproduction rims.

On my 1976 kz900 I run perelli sport demons they are great 120/90-18 rear 100/90-19 front. Oh yeah I do run stock width spoked rims.
