Shaft drive ratios was created by DGA
Hi, trying to find out the gear ratios for the early '80s KZ shaft drive bikes. If anyone knew the either reduction ratio or the driver/ driven tooth count in the final drive unit, that would be great, thanks!

Awwm 34 views and no replies. Anyone there have a spare shaft drive rear end they could turn over and check for me? Put a mark on the wheel spline and turn the input shaft and count the turns until the wheel spline has done one full revolution. If it takes 3 revolutions to one wheel revolutions then it is 3:1 etc. Please, someone?

I can't say for sure, but it might help get some replies if you stated which model you are talking about. There were at least a dozen early 80's shaft drive KZ models. Ed

Are you trying to change the gear ratio?
It would probably be easier to run a shorter or taller tire depending on which way youre trying to go.

Im actually trying to find a lower numerical rear end gear for a Yamaha Virago. I have an '80 KZ750 E but it's a chain bike so no good there. The Viragos have low gearing from when the speed limit was 55 mph and there is no other taller gear for them, so was hoping a KZ rear end could be adapted in.

Already am there with the taller tire, Virago has a 16" rear wheel, the Seca has the exact same wheel style and shaft drive but is an 18", this gave me a 10% RPM decrease at the same speed. The rear exhaust comes out between the swingarm and tire so had to cut and move that forward. There is a taller 5th gear from a late model Vstar but don't want to have to split the engine to put that in, so was looking for something a little less work.

What size is the 18" tire you have on there?
