WRONG SEAT PAN ??? was created by kzdcw
I'm new to the forum and you guys have been very helpful before. As I have said before, I purchased a non-running 77' KZ1000A and have discovered that the seat pan that it has is an earlier pan that has the single seat post ( 1 threaded bolt ) instead on the seat catch bracket w/loop? Don't know why since I have no history on the bike, been in storage for over 2 decades. The seat lock is correct for the 77' year model but obviously won't work with the single seat post. The pan is in terrific shape and newly covered. Anything I can do to make my set-up work?

No, the single-post latch requires a different closing mechanism and was found on the Z1 series (1973-1975). The Z1 seats are dimensionally the same as your motorcycle's. You'll have to source the u-shaped latch and...I have seen them on eBay. If there are no holes for the u-shaped latch on your seat pan, you can either drill for the new latch or get another seat from a later model KZ1000.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationFrom comparing a couple of seats on eebbaayy it appears that the Z1 seat has the bolt holes for the A1 seat latch bracket. The Z1 seat might be incorrectly identified, though.

Listed as a Z1 seat. I do not know if it is correct, but you could compare it to yours.
It might be a KZ1000-Ltd seat.

1977 1000-Ltd seat which might mount the same as the A1. From the diagrams it has the same mounting hardware as the A1.

Michael, Your right, it has the closing mechanism lock for the correct 77' year. And you feel that the pan I have is the same as a 77" pan, it definitely doesn't have any other holes drilled and tapped into it for the later seat catch bracket. Question, do you think the pan has enough thickness to drill and tap for new bracket? I imagine it would be just line up the loop of the bracket with the seat lock?

If I recall correctly, when installing both the single post and the loop post, no tapping is involved. There are nuts that fit on the backside of the posts that hold them in place. It can be a bit tricky to install and/or remove either post type.

Your probably right Michael. Looking at the seat pan again and comparing the thickness to other holes on the pan, it appears that there would probably be threaded nuts that are welded on the opposite side of the pan for the bolts or post to thread to? But without removing the padding to see, I'm only guessing? I think it would be a matter of placing the seat catch bracket up against the inside of the pan and see where holes would have to be drilled to mount it and the loop of the bracket aligning itself correctly with the seat lock?

Looking at pictures of earlier 73-75' ZL pans and KZ 76' and later, it doesn't appear there is any difference dimensionally between the pans? Maybe someone can enlighten me on this. I think the only difference is the mounting post or loop latch location between the two. My pan definitely doesn't have additional mounting holes for the seat latch other than the single hole for the earlier mounting post. What I do notice is that the rubber cushions on the underside of the pan don't really line up directly over the frame rails? Is that the way they normally are?

Z1 also has a different (straight across) frame brace by the seat lock and a different rear fender mount, which is lower and has a different rubber block.

Dimensionally the same, quite different, sell the seat and buy a different one, that would be easiest
