Help with clutch cable 83 Shaft KZ750

This is my first motorcycle and I have finally gotten her running but the clutch cable snapped on me. I got a new one but when installed it felt like it was too long because the clutch handle had to pressure on it. I checked everything and no matter what adjustment I did it never felt like it had enough pressure. I checked the size of the new cable and it is the same as the old. Am I missing anything, any steps to set up the cable properly? Any help would be appreciated. Here are some pictures to help you guys find my mistakes, thanks.

It won't let me upload my pictures, any tips on what to check? I am missing the clutch return spring, would that make a difference? I did not have one when I opened the side cover.

The missing spring is most likely the problem.

I'm not familiar w the 750-Shaft clutch cable stuff --- I think it's different from most other KZs.
If you don't have a repair manual, get a Kawasaki factory service manual:
search eebbaayy for KZ750 shaft manual & make sure your bike is included on the model application chart on the back cover.
