Lost cover

Hi all. I own a 77 KZ650 with Dyna S ignition,yada yada yada. My issue is The first day in Alabama I lost the left side cover on a 47 mile ride. The paint is custom Hunter green marble. My painter is willing to try matching the color if I can find a cover he can work with. Anybody know where I might procure said cover? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

...Are the KZ letters on your other cover smaller than the 650 numbers? If so, these will work.

I'm curious. Does your bike have the stock air box or individual pod air filters? Thanks, Ed

...I've had that same thought myself, Ed. But, I've known people with both set ups and both have lost covers.

...More than air flow, I think it's old dried out and shrunken mounting grommets that are the culprit. Best thing to do, is replace them every couple of years. Also, to hit the grommets with a thin coating of grease, or silicone spray every now and then to make it easier to remove and replace the covers. It will also keep them from drying out and shrinking. That, or have a couple spare sets painted and ready to go.

Bought the bike with no letters or numbers on the covers. Even the alternator cover was machined clean

Using the pods. I did inspect the grommets. Will be replacing them dried, but somewhat resilient rubbers as soon as I find good replacements. In the meantime, gonna secure with wire ties. I will opt for the grommet lube as opposed to the stash of painted covers. Thanks guys for the observations.

...Were there indents in the covers for the badges to recess into? That cover takes the small KZ/large 650 emblem. If the cover is smooth, it takes the all large letters and numbers emblem.

Twas smooth as a baby's derriere :lol: Thanks for the info. Used Z1 in the past for points and voltage regulator till they ran out of points. I went to the Dyna S rather than wait till the points materialized. Again. thanks for the info. Keep it upright.

As president of the fresh grommet fan club, I heartily endorse them.

Unfortunately, many folks just don't think about needing to replace the grommets until they belatedly discover having lost a side cover.

Side covers have been lost with new grommets, and side covers have been lost from relatively brand new bikes (would guess mostly from improper installation where all the nibs were mistakenly not pushed fully and firmly into their respective as-new grommets.)

Besides requiring a more careful and deliberate installation, the diy security feature also offers some very limited protection against quick-snatch theft of the side covers.

And of course, concours examples most likely won't have holes drilled through the side cover nibs.
