650 D2 brake questions

G'afternoon gents...I have started to rebuild the front calipers on this 79 KZ650 D2 and ran into some parts confusion. I got the piston seals and parts I needed however, the piston rubber dust covers seem to be a problem. The parts book and web sites show a PN of 43054-003 for the front and 43054-004 for the rear. The dust covers are held in place by a metal retainer ring. The ring is not shown or mentioned in the parts list and the -003 dust covers are too small for the front calipers. If I had to, I can reuse one old cover and one old ring but the other set is too far gone. If they arent in the parts book, where are they?? Can someone help clarify these issues for me please. I have a feeling that this will not be the first parts confusion I will encounter with this project

To add to the confusion, when I ordered the -004 covers for the rear caliper they sent the -003 instead....

Is it for certain that the calipers at hand are the stock calipers for the bike at hand?

I dont see it there Ed. Item #9 is the dust cover. Its called out as a 43054-003 but its an 1/8' smaller OD than the original and the ring wont fit into the lip of the cover. I was hoping that the ring and cover came together but they didnt.

Now there are two different size pistons...I have the larger one..42mm but the parts book doesn't call out a different cover PN.
If you go to and go to the 4:40 mark you can see what I am trying to explain. I remember reading a thread here about a similar thing on a 400 caliper. So I checked the 400 parts break down and I didnt see one there listed either.

Hello Patton...yes...I am 99.9% sure its OEM stock. The bike has 4000 miles on it and the PO bought it new in 79. He said he scared himself in freeway traffic one day and parked it. That was 30 years ago and hasnt been touched since.

If you have the 42mm piston wouldn't you need the part marked #21 (part number 43049-002)? The diagram shows that piston ring seal next to the 42mm piston. Ed

I think 21 is the square cut piston ring fluid seal that fits into the groove cut into the housing . The dust cover goes on the other end of the piston. Thats #9, then the retainer ring fits into that seal lip and is tapped into a shallow chamfer of the bore holding the outer edge of the dust cover in place

This was all I could find regarding the other caliper dust seal with a retainer ring that I mentioned. Its in post #597973
