Hi.
I'm trying to "modernize" and upgrade my 440 Ltd and was wondering if somebody could help me with som ideas for a good brake upgrade solution? If there was calipers and discs from bigger bikes that could fit or if you know about some new upgrade kits that may be interesting.

Thanks.

Interesting question. According to Kawasaki.com the front disk caliper used on the 1980 KZ440-A1 (LTD) is the same as the left caliper used on several KZ1000 models (see image below). All those KZ1000 models are shown to have dual front disk brakes. So is would seem that the right side caliper from those KZ1000 models, which basically are mirror images of the left calipers, should work on your bike. Your bike's right side fork slider is already set up to accept a caliper. So one question is - does the right hand side of your front wheel hub have provisions for bolting on a rotor? If it does, you may be able bolt on a second rotor like the rotor on the left side of your bike (the KZ1000 rotors use different part numbers than yours), add a right side caliper from one of the KZ1000 models listed, change your master cylinder to 5'8" and add the appropriate splitter and hoses, and end up with dual front disk brakes. It may or may not work, so it's a bit of a gamble, but if you can find the rotor and caliper at a low price it may be worth a try. Ed

I could be wrong, but I don't think a second disk can be added to a 440 wheel.
He can remove the dust cover to see for himself, though. :)

The 1979 Kawasaki KZ1000ST is the model called "KZ1000-E1." That is not one of the models on the list of those that use the same left caliper as the KZ440, so I would be cautious about trying it. It is possible that it might work, but using calipers from models not on the list seems like it would introduce other variables that might increase the risk of not working. Ed

Hi. I am looking to do the same upgrade on my 440ltd 1981 D4

I have checked behind the dust cover on the wheel and it will support a 2nd disk which is good, Can you confirm which Z1000 uses the same caliper? and I will source a right hand caliper for the 440. Thanks
