Fork Oil Level was created by lhemrick
I just have a question about the amount of fork oil. I have a 1981 KZ550 LTD with air pressured front forks. When I look in my Clymer Manual it says to refill with around 9 oz of oil but if I'm reading it right it also says to check the level without the spring inside to a level of 14" from the top of the fork. Is that correct? Its gonna take a lot more than 9 oz to do that and comes real close to being above the seal when the spring is put back in. Can anyone add anything to help me out?

Thanks!

I'll check the manual when I get home. I've always followed their directions and it worked out just right.

You may want to consider getting a Kawasaki Service Manual for your bike. Here's a cut and paste from one for your 1981 KZ550-LTD. Ed

Thanks, That's the very same info my Clymer manual has so I guess I'm good to go.

Thanks again!

Yes, the clymer and factory show the same numbers.

Remember the forks are to be fully extended when adding the oil. Best to have the wheel off the ground.

Also, you have to pump the forks (slowly) several times to get the air out so the level is accurate. Then the dipstick reading will determine the final addition of oil.
