1978 Z1R rear master rebuild
27 Mar 2014 04:39
Does the plastic reservoir come off the aluminum housing somehow? Hard to tell if all the crud got flushed out.
Should the large hex cap on the side be removed for cleaning behind? Service manual does not explain much.

Here's a recent topic about a 70s KZ1000 Rr mc that might help.
The Z!R mc looks very similar in the diagrams & shares some parts w the 1000.
KZR --- rear master reservoir o-ring?
Here's the o-ring:
Redline Cycles --- Rear master cylinder reservoir o-ring -
PS: you may already know this.... if you need a Fr Br mc piston kit for the Z1R & can't find anything, the K&L 32-8052 is a good match, having only minor differences. I have comparative photos that someone posted.

I saw that info but it does not cover reservoir or side plug disassembly... I did see the thread about the front master and I did order that K&L kit. I have not ripped into the front, but all the seals in the rear look reusable......no corrosion just gelled fluid.

I've rebuilt several of these and I've never managed to get the plastic reservoir to actually come off. There are two screws that hold the reservoir on (hidden under a removable plastic plate down in the bottom of reservoir). But every time I've tried to take these out the phillips head (or JIS) starts to strip and I gave up. I also wasn't sure if I could get another sealing washer to go under the side bolt, so I left that alone too.
I don't think Kawasaki really intended for either of these things to be removed for service, as the diagrams show it as a single assembly. However, with the piston assembly removed, and the plastic plate removed from the bottom of the reservoir, I've ended up pretty confident that I got all of the crud out.
The piston assembly and seals, retaining clip and washer, and dust boot are all still available from Kawasaki.
Z1E sells the kit.

I have removed those screws with a cordless impact driver giving the trigger little pops , no problems.
You really want to take it off and give her a good cleaning under there and replace that O ring.
Here is what my 78 kz1000 manual says about what to use .

Thanks for all the info. I will give it a shot and try to pull it completely apart. I think I can get away with reusing the side plug gasket since it is not under pressure or maybe it is still available.

I broke loose the screws with my 70's impact driver and a hammer. I could not believe how much crusty fluid jelly was in there. Now I need to find a reservoir o-ring.
