630 is passed it's prime. A 530 is perfectly suitable for any modern bike. No ring = less drag but more maintenance. O ring = most drag minimal maintenance. X ring = less drag than O ring and similar maintenance.

Don't be ridiculous! It's only a flesh wound!

Do yourself a favor and convert to a 530 setup. There are a lot more choices in chains. And they weigh less and are stronger than the original 630 chain.
While o-ring chains are good, the best are x-ring chains. Again, lots of choices in x-ring chains once you convert.

Z1 hooked me up with a 530 x-ring chain with the correct size sprockets. It was long overdue...
Make sure you get enough length because it will be different (depending on the sprocket sizes) and be mindful you may be limited on the size of the front sprocket.

I've been using a D.I.D. 530 O-ring chain for more than 20,000 miles and it has barely stetched or worn at all. At the rate it is going I have no doubt it will last 50,000 miles or more. Im told their X-ring chain may be even better. I use Maxim Chain Wax about every 300 or so miles. Ed

what about the OEM chain? what's the consensus on that? I assume it'd be a quality item.

The genuine Kawasaki chain is a high quality item. They can be fairly expensive unless you find a good deal on a NOS (new old stock) one on eBay. My KZ650-C1 originally came with an endless O-ring chain that I believe was made by EK. One thing to keep in mind, if your chain is endless you must remove the swing arm to install it. DON'T cut it. I'm running the RK GB530GXW. It has 10K / lb. tensile strength and a wear index of 1000. It's for street bikes up to 1400 cc and is their replacement chain for the Hayabusa. I keep it clean and lubed and it's working great for me.Swapping to a 530 setup is definitely worth it. It saved a bunch of weight and seemed to make the bike run a bit smoother.

Mine wore out pretty quickly but I probably did not lube it enough. A modern X ring chain is much better IMHO.
