Adding rake with triple trees versus frame?

17 Feb 2014 13:45
#622563
Newbie here with a question on adding rake...

Can you add rake to a frame by modifying/creating a triple tree where the bottom section of the tree juts out farther forward than the top section, and they are angled up from 90 degrees from the stem?

Thanks,

Farnie

Cant say I have seen that done.

It seems that the torque or pressure created on the lower tree could be a problem as you change or widen the angle.

Also with the lower tree pushed forward, could magnify the unwanted twisting of the steering......might feel very loose.

I'm not a engineer, but we do have some very smart guys on here that will be able to answer.

you can get raked triple trees ( set of upper and lower and stem)........I'm sure you can't just do the bottom..... :S I know you can get adjustable tripples for road racing......

Offset or raked triple trees are common with Harleys. Anytime you change the rake though you need to make sure that you don't alter the trail to the point of creating unsafe handling.

Harley FL's had adjustable rake stems in the late 50's early 60's on Panheads.
Or you can Just Do It! Cut! Chop! Weld! And drink beer when your done!

This is what you need.
Each yoke is 2 piece with angle shims to adjust the rake whilst keeping the stanction bores in correct alignment.
There are other ways of getting the same effect with stepped hinged yokes etc or just have some solid ones made with the offset built in.
The later (solid) way needs careful setting up though because adjusting the head bearings alters the distance between the yokes and puts the stanction bores out of alighnment. This distance needs to remain constant by the use of shims placed under the top yoke or some other method.

I can make you a set of raked trees, just put me as your beneficiary and sign a waiver and we are good :) Absolutely the most dangerous thing you can do if you plan on doing any kind of spirited riding at all. Follow Larry C's link and read it well!!!
Use that calculator. It's easy and informative. FYI, I have 5.35" of trail on my turbo and I bust off some big speed passes with total confidence!!

Thanks guys for all the feedback- seems like a bad idea. especially when it would be easy to have the frame chopped up and neck adjusted by a pro. Or just get a raked frame to start the project...
