frame cutting and welding
15 Feb 2014 18:19
My 81 kz 1000j is posted here under projects. It gets no posts now because i had not come up with anything to comment on lately. Here is my problem.I am taking it from its messed up state to hopefully a stock appearing bike.Brian sent me a seat. The previous owner cut up the frame, made like stilts out of the top tube to raise the rear of the frame and lift the tank. Then he had to redo the battery box. Thus, the new seat will not fit down where its supposed to.Lots of daylight in the front.I have a complete nontitled 78 frame.Could i take the top pieces out of it and weld in where he hacked it up? are the frames like enough? Also, What was the seat supposed to latch onto, he cut off anything it would hook onto.I am hoping my other frame has some tabs to put on.Input appreciated.

I'd look for another frame. I'm sure you could hack your frame back to stock, but is it worth all the trouble?

I have another frame. But pulling the motor, the forks, wheels, electrics, etc seems like a lot more work than fixing the frame I have now.

You could do some surgery on your frame since you have a donor

I am going to post some pictures here tomorrow so you all will know what i am working against. It would be much easier to fix the frame in my opinion.I would imagine welding costs a lot.

I would just swap frames and stamp the titled numbers on to the untitled frame and keep my mouth shut but you say your spare frame is a 1978 which is totally different to the J frame unless you have a spare J frame too ?

Where do you live? By me there are alot of welders advertising on craigslist . I would imagine if its not major ( hardtail, wheels, anything complicated) then you shouldnt pay much. I would call around and get prices.

I would post up a wanted ad for the back half of a j frame (or try brian) cut behind the cradle and below the shock mounts, clean up the area, slug and weld. Not to hard
Trying to make the 78 frame work would be crazy, the seat mounts are far far different

My extra frame is not a j, its a 78.Thanks for the headsup on that. The only tubing that is hacked is:
the top tube, where it would normally meet up with the crossover portion where the front of the seat would rest he replaced with some tubing that at the end, near where the front of the seat sits,he put about 2 inch long
square tubing stilts under it to raise the tank up in the rear. This of course made him have to create a new battery box out of square tubing. The tray slides into it as it should. All the side pieces, neck, rear of the frame, have never been touched.
