KZ1000A fork swap
14 Feb 2014 23:50
To the guys who have done a fork swap on a Z bike, what fork did you use and how involved was it? I want to use a conventional fork to maintain the vintage look. Something with handlebar clamps would be ideal.

I have a set of 2000 GSX750 polished forks with Gold Valve emulators and All Balls bearings to fit on a KZ frame. I might even have the matching 17" wheels. And the top clamp would be easy to convert to standard bars using 750 twin handlebar clamps (got those also). I think they are 41mm diameter. I set this up to use on my 750 twin, but I'm going to use ZX12 USD forks instead.
Also have an extra set of unpolished stock low mile 2000 GSX750 bare forks.
Bet the shipping would be killer though.

Why everybody uses Suzuki forks and not Kawasaki? Wouldn't the forks of a modern ZX fit?
Just curious.

I have been using GSXR parts such as the triple trees and forks because from my experience the used parts are cheaper and easier to find. EBay is FULL of GSXR parts. I went with the triple trees and forks from a 2000 GSXR600 on my 1980 KZ1000 using the All Balls Racing bearing kit.

Most ZX forks are to short, except for certain year ZX9 forks.
I have a set of 2005 ZX12R forks that are going on my ZX11, and a set of 2002 ZX12 forks for my 750 twin project.

I was given a complete front end from a CBR 1000F so I'm going to see if I can swap that onto mine. It isn't the inverted type but it has larger diameter tubes than the stock one and the length is almost the same as the stock Kz. I had seen it done on another Kz 1000 and it looked good so I figured that since it was free I'll try it and if I don't like it down the road I'll swap it for something else. So I'll have the CBR front end and a ZRX swingarm and rear wheel when I'm finished.
