1980 KZ 550 LTD fork oil capacity was created by dfinnegan71
Hey there, does anyone know off the top of their head the capacity of fork oil in 1980 KZ 550 LTD forks? Here comes the curve ball...ready? These forks have been lowered 2 inches internally with spacers. Does that change the amount of oil needed for proper function? How would I know if I have too much or too little in there? Thanks for your help!

The method used by almost ALL flattrack racers (with RWU lowered forks) is to remove the spring and compress the forks all the way down. Fill forks to 6" from the top re-install springs and caps & done. This is a great place to start. More oil gives slightly firmer ride, less oil gives slightly softer ride. Good luck, Paul

Don't be ridiculous! It's only a flesh wound!

Too much oil will blow out the seals.

This PDF has the details of how to measure it, and a rough estimate to start you off with.
home.comcast.net/~loudgpz/GPZweb/Mnls/Kz...9to85_ThirdParty.pdf

Page 45 of the book, (page 55 of the pdf), has the instructions.
Page 69 of the book, (page 79 of the pdf), has the chart. If I recall, you are using KZ550C forks? They are in the chart.

Bike on center stand, forks fully extended, (front wheel off the ground), springs out, the oil level is 14 inches from the top opening of the forks.

Remember to pump the forks and recheck the level a few times.

Lowering the forks shouldn't require a change in level sinc it is measured when fully extended. That way the oil will be at the normal level when the forks get bottomed out or topped out from bumps and potholes.
