A search would of revealed Z1 Enterprises, AllsBalls, etc....
Buy new and buy roller, it's a safety issue.

Replace the original steering stem bearings with tapered roller bearings. I did; they are 1,000 times better. Here's the All Balls kit for the 1980 KZ750-E1. Ed

thank you so did they change bearing styles from '80 - '81? because i picked up a parts bike that was an '81 and it has the tapered roller bearings in it but in the neck tube on my '80 frame wouldn't accommodate those bearings I'm guessing i would need the right races for it.
in which case could i use the race from the '81 frame? but seemed it would be very difficult to get it out without damaging it due to the lack of a lip on the inside.

The kit comes with everything including the new races. You remove all the old stuff and install the new and you're ready to roll. You will need to apply grease to the bearings when installing. Ed

Ok thanks guys! So just curious did they change the bearing design from '80-'81 or did one of the previous owners of the '81 do the conversion at some point?

You made me curious since I also have a 1980 KZ750E1 so I checked Kawasaki.com Owner Info, Parts Diagrams etc and it looks like Kawasaki used the same bearing and same races on on pretty much all the 750s - twins included - from 76 to 84. .....Or to answer your question then it looks like Kawasaki did not change bearing design from 80 to 81.
The All Balls stuff is good quality. I've used it to replace my wheel bearings and am thinking about replacing the steering head bearings next season.
