old chain could i save it?

so my chain is original so im pretty sure it is o-ring style, so is there any chance i could save it? i know "spin the tire and watch the chain as it gones on and comes off the sprockets to see if there is any popping of the links. if there is a popping or kinking appearance, this could be a couple of things... lack of lubrication or the chain is stretched." im on a budget build so i would like to reuse as much as possible? or is it just too risky?

There are many things you could check:
Popping noise as you described
Chain stretch - are the marks to the end
Is is rusted
Does it pull away from the back sprocket
Does it appear to be properly lubricated
Does the rear sprocket appear worn

AFAIK the original chains were not the o-ring type, but I could be mistaken.

No doubt. A case of being penny wise and pound foolish. It would also be a good time for a 530 chain conversion.

If the chain moves freely and doesn't show sign of wear or rust, you can probably keep going. If there's any doubt in your mind, get a new chain and sprocket set.If you decide to replace the chain, consider using a newer 530 weight chain.

Anything is possible using CGI, but rear wheel lockup usually results in a lowside.
Pretty well impossible to throw you over the forks.

Had a exc quality RK o ring chain for the last 28 years or so and have lubed it every 300 miles give or take. It felt really good with it adjusted ... couldn't feel any play at all till I took the wheel off then it was easy to feel the play on each joint.

Defently raised my heart rate after thinking of Goose !!! New X chain and sprockets sittin in the garage waiting for a warmer day.

The way I knew a chain was dead was when it did not have consistent free play around the full length. As you move the wheel you find loose and tight spots where segments have stretched.
