Swingarm Swap for 84 Gpz550 (monoshock) was created by jfarhanbod
I cant seem to find any info on swingarm swaps for a gpz550. Does anyone know what would work? The bike is already monoshocked too so if I can use the existing points it would be great. From looking at other kz builds (750,1000) it looks like a 01-03 gsxr600 swingarm is the same length and you just need to make a guide for the inside since the kz bolt is narrower. This would be perfect since I'm doing a gsxr1000 front end swap and then I could get matching wheels.

Thanks in advance, as you can tell by this post, Im pretty clueless with swingarm swaps

Never heard of anyone doing this to a 550 so ... first thing to do is to measure how wide the pivot tube on the front of your arm is. Then you can look for another swingarm that is same size or close to it. That will help narrow down what arms you can use. I agree it would be good to use same wheels for a matched look. Either way, you will probably have to adapt new linkage to your bike. Best thing is once you find an arm that might work would be to buy the complete rear assembly if possible. Arm, wheel, brakes, linkage, etc. Then you could start to fabricate the needed mounts. If possible take pictures of new assembly on original bike to see what angle shock is and how everything fits. I'd look at the arm assembly from your GSXR1000 to see if it would work first beings you already have the front. Or look at the 600/750 series also. You will need to start measuring to see what you have and what will work and then tear into it. It will take work but all of these types of swaps do. Lots of guys on here can help you thropugh the process once you get going...

Yeah the lack of info on the 550s really sucks. I took some quick measurements, and just in case someone in the future is looking, the gpz550 swing arm is 9 inches without the dust caps and 9 1/16 with the dust caps on which is 230mm.

Thats on the actual swingarm, on the frame it also comes out to 9 1/16 or 230mm

Is this the same as the bigger KZ's?

Its real close...can't remember the exact measurement but that's very close. I want to say the KZ is about 9 1/4 or thereabouts. That's close enough. That means swingarms off a busa or GSXR's will work with spacers or shaving a little off...I think the arm off a GSXR1000 will work so if you can find all the parts from a Gixxer of the year to match the front-end you already have, it should make your life simpler. There will be some fabrication to be done but it looks like it will be easier then it sounded like it might be. I know they use the swingarms off GSXR's and Busa's for swaps so it should fit on yours. Maybe someone who has used one of these arms knows the exact size so you will know for sure though.
