So I bought myself an 82 KZ1000 K2 LTD to turn into a cafe-ish type bike as a father son project.

My goal is to swap out the suspension for some modern USD fronts and a monoshock rear end.

With Leon's help I have already sourced a 2002 FZ1 rear swing arm, shock and linkages, and so the next step is to choose the right forks to go with it.

Leon suggested an R1 front and then go with the R1 rear tire.

Can anyone tell me is the 02-03 R1 forks are too short? From what I am reading on the net, the 02's are shorter than the 01's.....in any case I plan on getting Leon to machine the triples to fit my bike's stem etc., but I want to make sure that the forks I buy aren't too short. Also if I got with a different fork say from a ZX6R or similar, I want to be able to use the matching rear wheel.

Can anyone suggest some good fork and wheel candidates for this setup?

I'd go with whatever Leon suggested

Got into it today and started taking the K2 apart. I checked the compression before I started the dismantling and it was perfect. 155-160psi on all four cylinders. So after I saw that I started taking it apart.

I need to send my lower triple and R1 triples and FZ1 swinger to Leon for modification. I'll also need to get some 3" fork extenders made for the 2002 5PW R1 forks to make up for the shorter length....but it should all work out nicely in the end.

I also picked up a set of aftermarket 2-1 headers off Streetfighterkz on the forum, which look to be nicely made. They appear to be ceramic coated in some sort of white finish, but I will paint over them in black.

I'm gonna go mono shock rear too, so this will be quite a different bike when it's done.

Looking good! How are you going to do a 3" fork extenders made for the 2002 5PW R1 forks to make up for the shorter length?

3" is quite a bit. You sure you need that much? I would mock up with just the lower triple at first to get an idea what you want. That's what I did and ended up just making a drop upper triple for my ZX10 legs.

Did you ever get that Koso unit?

The 02 R1 forks are considerably shorter. I'm gonna try and mock it up today if time allows, but with the shorter forks and smaller front wheel, it looked like I needed that much when I held up the R1 front end up next to the KZ front end while the bike was still together. I'll take more pics later. To show the differences, etc.

As for the Koso dash, apparently that's still in transit. Speed isn't their strong suit. I will let you know when that arrives. I figure another week. After which I will cancel the charge if it doesn't show.

Cool thank you for the link.. B) So it's just a press on fit for the forks? Why not use older GSXR forks?
Koso dash is good stuff. I will get on for the KZ.
Do you know what he has to mod to fit the swinger?

I wanted to go with something other than the gold GSXR forks that everyne else has done. Perhaps in hindsight it would've been simpler as they are longer, but the extensions should do the trick.

My FZ1 swinger is 250mm wide at the pivot. The KZ is 235mm. So the FZ1 swinger needs to be trimmed 7.5mm from each side or a even a smidge more to allows for some end caps. The KZ swing are doesn't have caps, but the needle bearings are sealed on the outsides of them. Also the KZ pivot bolt is a smaller diameter than the FZ1 so some bushings need to be pressed into the FZ1 pivot tube (that the needles ride on) so that the KZ bolt fits snugly into it.

Thank for the info very helpful. I know how you feel I try to do my own thing as well. I want to change the forks and swinger on my 78 1000. New to the KZ stuff so I'm trying to get as much info and tips as I can.

This will be a one of a kind for sure. Keep up the hard work.
