kush drive differences? was created by chevyboy
I recently purchased a rear sprocket and sprocket hub for my 73 z1. I had the rubber kush drive inserts that came with my wheel. When I try to put it together nothing fits. Just seems like its way too tight. Are there differences in the rear sprocket hubs for kz900s as the years progress. The hub and sprocket I bought are off of a 79 kz1000 ltd. I know the wheel I have it a kz900 wheel. Any insight here is much appreciated

Yes there are differences. Early hubs (73-76) have individual (Push-In Style) rubber dampers, 77 & later hubs use a damper that is connected into one piece. There are variations in Mag and Spoke Hubs as well. Look at "BuyKawasaki.Com" website under Parts Diagram at 1976 KZ900, and then go to 1977 KZ1000.

Here is a repair topic from the Archives.

KZRider - Cush drive/SHOCK DAMPER repair procedure

cush drive/SHOCK DAMPER repair procedure .... By jtmcculloch

The rubber cush drive SHOCK DAMPERS wear and become sloppy.
When this happens you will develop excess front to back and side to side play in the hub.

Remove rear wheel assy

Lay wheel on its side

Remove cush drive and dampers

Clean cush drive, dampers and hub with Brake Kleen

Make a 1" wide x 4" long wooden tool the same thickness as the ears on the cush drive. this will be used to check the fit on each damper.

You will take one damber at a time, place in the hub. set the wooden tool in the slot. squeeze the damper to make the wooden tool snug in the slot. note the air gap between the damper and the sides of the hub.

Remove damper from hub.

Now spread urethane on the sides of the damper and let cure overnight.
If the old damper is cracked use the urethane as a glue in the crack.

On the next day you can check the fit and grind if needed to make a good fit.

Regular silicone has about 60lbs of tensil strength.
Urethane is over 600lbs of tensil strength. It cures like tire rubber. <<<---

It is great for a varitey of repairs. It's mostly used in the automotive trade to glue/retain windshields and window glass.
