lets rebuild some brakes was created by kamakazie1000
So gents, i'm going to start rebuilding my brakes on my 78 kz1000. as is brakes are completely disassembled, all pistons out of calipers, all seals/boots/etc. removed.
im going to do the back first.
completely rebuilt caliper- refinish caliper, new pistons, seals, boots, pads, etc.
rebuilt master cylinder
braided lines.

what are my options for refinishing/painting/coating the caliper? i was thinking anything of anodizing or maybe cerakote of kg gunkote. anyone have any experience with either of these?

i just ordered my rear master cylinder rebuild kit, but first things first. the original mc is in decent shape outwardly and the fluid reservoir is in good shape, but the piston is stuck/frozen inside the unit. any ideas? since the rebuild kit comes with a new piston, im not really concerned with keeping this one intact, i just want it out of there.
also, anyone know how to remove the fluid reservoir without damaging it?

regards,
J.H.C

Can you aim it into something safe and soft and blow it out of there?

Got the piston out of the rear master cylinder! Just hammered in a big easy out bit and backed it out. So now as soon as I get the diaphragm off I can paint or coat the rear master cylinder and rebuild!

I had been nonchalantly spraying wd 40 and brake parts cleaner in it for the past 2 weeks or so, but yes, the easy out bit was fairly easy at pulling the stuck piston out. Now I just need to find out how to get the diaphragm off without braking it so I can have the master cylinder body cerakoted or something. Anyone know the procedure for pulling the diaphragm off?
Picture will be posted tonight

good evening kzriders!
so i got some pictures up of my disks and a few of the pistons from the calipers that i need opinions on.

an overview of what i'm thinking my brake build to be...
- cerakote & rebuild rear master
- cerakote & rebuild calipers /w new seals, boots, caliper half(rear), shaft seals and o rings(front), and bleeders. also new pistons if i need to, which i think i most likely do.
-new aftermarket front master cylinder, probably going with one from dime city cycles
-braided lines
-new banjo bolts, line seal washers, misc. hardware
-rotors ground and drilled, most likely by the folks at true disk.

the rotors and the front calipers are on the bike as i was making sure they fit with the new wheel and forks. the rotors and front calipers are of a 77 kz1000 ltd.
the rotors appear straight and dont have any deep grooves, but some rust and possible pitting. over all i think they are reusable for grinding and drilling. but if you look at the pictures and think otherwise, id love to hear it.
the calipers are in good shape mechanically and are perfect for cerakoting and rebuilding
the pistons are where i'm somewhat unclear. the have some gouges, nicks, rusting and pitting, although im not sure its in the danger areas or not. if i have to get new ones, fine, if i could use these, great.

one last question, i ask again, anyone know how to get the diaphragm off the rear master cylinder without damaging it?

regards,
J.H.C.

Steel wool should remove the rust from the rotors without too much trouble. If you plan to resurface them (may not be necessary), consider this place. Ed
