Rear tire size
28 Aug 2013 11:25
I have a hardtail kit coming soon. I am running the factory rims at the moment. Black mags, front 19" and rear 16". Factory tire size is 130/90-16. The guy that I got the frame from says should be able to fit a 160 and possibly a 180 rear tire. Question is will this size tire fit on the factory rear rim? If not, does anyone know a place that will build custom rims? I would like to go with spokes anyway.

I cant help you with a spoked wheel, but if you're looking for a wider rear mag wheel, Sandy Kosman still offers a wheel widening service. Have a look at
kosmanspecialties.com/services/wheel-widening-and-weldups/
Good luck with your project.

Re: Rear tire size
28 Aug 2013 13:57David1050 is right...
If you decide to go spokes, Buchanan's is the way to go. You provide a hub and they can supply the rest in any size, style or color you want... spokes, rim, assembly- everything.
If you decide to use mags, Kosman is the go-to guy. They have the ability to widen and change the diameter, if that's what you want. Sandy's crew created a 17X6 for me out of an LTD wheel for me years ago. Good luck again. Paul

2 things ,
How wide can you go before the chain rubs the tire ?
And
Kosman is going through some stuff, they have changed hands like 3 times in the last 2 years.
Take my word for it, they are NOT the Kosman from years ago.

That's good to know... my dealings with Kosman come from 20 years ago when Sandy still controlled the place.

Its not just the frame which is a consideration....I assume you have the stock swingarm? If so check how much clearance that gives you.

thanks. The stock swing arm is what i measured. the guy that is building the hardtail says i will have 9.25 inches between the frame rails. that is not much diff than stock. I guess I will wait until the frame is done before worrying about the wheel and tire. Dont want to buy things twice.
