Front Sprocket will not budge
25 Aug 2013 23:10
I have a KZ750M (twin) that I am replacing the sprockets and chain on. The front sprocket seems to have been frozen on as I cannot get the nut to budge. I've hit it multiple times with a 400 ft lb pneumatic impact driver and still nothing. Is there a trick to taking these off or are they reverse threaded???
Thanks

They are not reverse threaded. It's possible the previous owner used permanent loctite on it. If so, you may need to heat it up first. Don't get too crazy with the heat because there is a seal back there behind it on the shaft and you don't want to melt it. Here's a good way to hold the counter-sprocket from turning when using the impact wrench. Ed

+1 what Ed said. I had the same problem. Just a small propane torch - heat a little then try to move it, heat a little more, try again, repeat until it comes off.

Thanks for the suggestions! I did try to hit it with a small propane torch, but it still didn't try to come off. I ended up using some of the engineering education I am paying so much for to get it off. I went out and bought a 5ft black steel pipe from the plumbing sections at a hardware store and fit it on the end of my breaker bar. As torque is equal to force x distance, I was able to get enough torque to break it loose! Gotta love these old bikes!

Might need a better impact gun, many out on the market advertise ratings that are nowhere near correct.
Many many times I've had to give assistance to some newer tech that bought an off-brand. Something like an ingersol rand 231-c or 2135 would be a sound investment and keep you from doing potentially dangerous improvised tool situations
Good luck with your project and be safe

If you don't have compressed air available, a nitrogen tank will work.
Or, you could use a torque multiplier. I have one that is a small 1/2" drive 4X, multiplies the input torque by 4, 100 ft lbs in, 400 ft lbs out. The bigger 1" drive models would just wind the frame up into a ball.

Glad to hear you got it off.
Mine wouldn't budge either. I tried to wrestle it with a breaker bar but no luck, a few burps with an impact and it was off. I'd like to think I loosened it up some
