Hey guys!

Not sure if this is the proper place for a chain question, but it will have to suffice. I'm a new rider on a '81 kz750, and I need a new chain. I'm aware that it is a size 530 chain, but was wondering if any of you knew what length(amount of links) I need. Thanks in anticipation!

Best

Ryan

If you have a 1981 KZ750 E model, then it is an E2...which makes your chain a 630, not a 530 (if it has not been converted). So, if the sprockets are stock, and you are running a stock 630 chain, then you need a chain with 84 links. All this info came from the www.Kawasaki.com site. I also recommend that when you replace your chain, you also replace both sprockets.

If it is a 630 You'll want to convert it to a 530. There's calculators for the sprocket conversion but keep in mind the sprockets will be larger which will call for a chain with more links.
Ask me how I know

I'm confused. I called a huge used parts motorcycle place, and the guy very confidently stated that my '81 would need a 530.....not sure how to confirm this...no idea if it was converted or not!

Just get the 530 chain and spockets, you need to change the all at the same time.
They wear together as a unit
If your parts source is reputable they can tell you the correct count on the number of links.
Leave that big and heavy 630 chain to the drag racers.

I hope your not thinking about getting a used chain.
Buy a new chain and sprockets.

And Z1Enterprises has a chain conversion page, so you could check that.

Also, you can try the GearingCommander page to see if you might want to go with different sprockets - they happen to have a 750E loaded in the database.

I think the E came stock w 13T Fr & 33T Rr sprockets. My 81 650 has the same ones & it seems high revving to me, so I'd guess a 750-4 would be more so. To improve the fuel economy you could go w a 13/32 or 13/30 setup. Or if a 14T Fr sprocket will fit, a 14/33 & maybe a 14/32. It has been reported that a larger Fr sprocket won't fit, but I have never confirmed that. These are just a few possibilities. Someone else may have a better suggestion or two, though.

Hey Guys!

Thanks for all the great feedback, it is much appreciated. I actually (and stupidly) found out about the chain size from looking under the seat. It IS a stock 630 chain, actually. I ended up buying a new o-ring chain, and cut it down to 84 links. Works beautifully!
