Gas Cap Removal
22 Jul 2013 21:56
I am working on stripping/priming the gas tank on my 1976 KZ900. I have not been able to figure out how to take the gas cap off. I can't tell if it is a pin or a screw holding it on. Can someone help me out with this please ? Thanks in advance.

Cap Hinge Pin Part # 92043-127 is shown as an "Active" part available through Kawasaki dealerships.
Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams, part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc. Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.

Be very careful tapping the pin out. Use many many little taps rather than one great wallop or you may damage the cap or tank. Ed

It is a roll pin that holds it on, this would be a good time to replace the rubber gasket on the gas cap.
This will help keep gas from leaking onto your new paint job.
It is very easy to replace.
Good Luck,
Mark

If you can find a wire coat hanger, cut a piece about 2" long, file the ends flat and using a hammer, carefully tap the roll pin out. If it were me, I'd put some rags to protect the tank & catch the pin when it comes out.

Thanks for all of the replies. If I can get the pin out, can it be reused ?
